5 Unique Businesses that Put Leicester on the Map

Discover Leicester, NC for yourself!

Originally called Turkey Creek, the unincorporated community of Leicester traces its modern roots back to 1829. Today, the bucolic valley is filled with local farms, artisans, and nature lovers who enjoy the quiet mountain views. But Leicester is quickly changing its reputation as a sleepy mountain community. Since 2000, they’ve seen a 16% growth in population, making it a great place to discover and live for those in the know.

Discover Leicester for yourself. Here are just five local businesses that are beginning to shape the community of Leicester.

Addison Farms Vineyard

Located at an elevation close to 2,300 feet, a visit to Addison Farms Vineyard is worth it for the 360-degree mountain views alone! The family-owned vineyard and winery started in 2009 as a way to preserve a 55-acre family farm that dates back to 1937. In just a few short years, the vineyard has grown to six acres and their wine has won a variety of awards. Visit their tasting room for samples and to take home one of the 1,000 cases produced each season.

Axeville Throwing Club

Ready to take on a new bar sport with Olympic aspirations? At Axevillle Throwing Club, anyone over 18 can safely take part in the sport of axe throwing while enjoying amazing local craft beers, ciders, and wine. Learn how to throw safely and accurately from in-house coaches, called “Axperts”. Check it out, bring a team of friends, or form a league for regular competition. We can testify that the venue makes for a great team-building activity.

Dr. King’s Farms

From a multi-generation farm in western Pennsylvania to a breakthrough natural medicine company, Dr. King’s Farms has an interesting backstory. But what it means for this farm is apparent in the quality of care seen in the animals raised on the land. Angus cattle, bison, elk, yak, and watusi (one of the largest collections in North America) roam 500 acres of peaceful countryside. Take a tour of the farm and see these amazing creatures up close and personal.

Franny’s Farm

Since they were founded in 2012, Franny’s Farm has quickly become a destination for the people of Leicester, as well as surrounding communities like Asheville, Marshall, and Canton. In addition to being an active organic farm, the location serves as a wedding and event venue, education center, and weekend getaway with eco cabins. Don’t miss their annual Barnaroo music festival, which happens on site each September in support of Asheville Music School.

Leicester Grocery & Garden

What’s the value of living in the middle of rich farmland if you can’t partake of the produce? All of the locally and organically produced foods at Leicester Grocery & Garden are free of GMOs, artificial flavors or colors, corn syrup, and hydrogenated fats. Come pick out seasonal fruits and veggies, raw local cheeses, fresh flowers and breads, locally roasted coffee, natural and local medicines, local beer and wine, and so much more! While you’re there, pick up your organic gardening supplies to try your hand at heirloom farming.
